Do you love chili? Do you live in New York? Do you want to meet me? If you answered yes to any of those questions (and I realize #3 will elicit few responses), then I’ve got the perfect event for you.
May 21st of this year will mark the day of the 18th annual Lone Star Chili Cook Off, put on by the New York City alumni chapters of the University of Texas and Texas A&M University. This is a wildly successful event in which all proceeds go to supporting scholarships to both universities to local high school seniors. The 2010 was attended by more than 1100 people; raising over $15,000 towards the scholarship programs.
Earlier this year, the University of Texas alumni chapter contacted me about creating a logo for the event. Being a University of Texas graduate myself, I was extremely happy to take on the project. It’s not often that I get a chance to work on a branding project that combines two of my favorite things – the University of Texas and chili, and in that order, just to be clear!
If you’ve already visited the new work section of Barrage Design Group’s website, you’ve read about the specifics of the project but I’ll touch on them again. It was decided that capturing elements of both Texas and New York was desired. Given the name of the event, a tip of the hat was in order to the famous lone star seen on the State of Texas flag. Then, centering the logo around the lone star was an obvious choice and immediately helped identify the logo with the state. The color scheme was also borrowed from the State flag of Texas. Finally, the iconic imagery of the New York skyline was added to the logo to represent the local flavor of the event.
Obviously, the big news is that yours truly will be in attendance for the event this year. I’d like to say that I’m an honored guest but it’s more likely I’ll just be the guy with chili stains on his shirt after an unforunate accident of some sort. So, when you spy the guy with the chili stains, be sure to stop and say howdy.
